History of Gem5

I will primarily direct your attention to two gem5 papers, namely the initial paper and the version 20 paper to read more about how gem5 came to be and why. The cliff's notes version is that gem5 comes from two prior simulation softwares, the GEMS (memory system) and M5 (CPU models and ISA's) simulators, in hopes of combining their power.
